Inspector General wants conviction Avendaño

Colombia’s Inspector General asked the Supreme Court to come to a conviction for bribery of former senator Teodolindo Avendaño.

The former Senator is currently awaiting trial for allegedly having withheld his vote on the 2006 re-election of President Álvaro Uribe after having accepted bribes.

Avendaño was a fierce opponent of the constitutional change needed for the re-election, but left Congress just before the vote. Because of his absence and the change of vote of senator Yidis Medina — convicted for having accepted bribes by current Minister Diego Palacio and current ambassador to Rome Sabas Pretelt de la Vega — the constitutional change was passed and Uribe was allowed re-election.

According to the Inspector General, Avendaño is guilty and should be convicted.
