Inspector general wants former DAS head convicted

Colombia’s Inspector General’s Office called on the Supreme Court to convict former DAS Director Jorge Noguera for allegedly allowing paramilitaries to infiltrate the government security agency, reports El Espectador.

During his time as head of DAS, Jorge Norguera collaborated with paramilitaries to carry out political assassinations, according to Inspector General’s Office.

A representative of the office said that there was no doubt that Norguera had participated in the assassinations of Zully Esther Colina, congressman Fernando Pisciotti, and professor Alfredo Correa de Andreis, who were all political targets of right-wing paramilitary groups in the Caribbean region.

The Inspector General’s Office said that Norguera had done everything in his power to destroy efforts from other Colombian agencies to combat the AUC in northern Colombia.

Norguera allegedly used former intelligence chief Rafael Garcia to thwart action against the now-disbanded paramilitary organization.

Norguera is currently being tried by the Supreme Court for homicide and conspiracy, as part of his alleged collaboration with the paramilitaries while head of DAS.
