Inmates from the Picota jail in Bogota on Sunday donated their lunch rations to victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti, in a gesture of solidarity.
Bogota television station City TV reported that the inmates gathered 3 tons of food to send to quake victims on Sunday.
“We decided to donate a day of our rations to support these people that one way or another are doing worse than we are. We aren’t doing well, but they are doing worse,” said inmate Jhon Jaime Betancourt.
Family visitors to the inmmates also contributed, in an outpouring of support for earthquake victims. Officals from the prison said all inmates were in agreement and that prisoners would have a day of hunger in solidarity with the people of Haiti.
The Red Cross is in charge of distributing rations.
