Indigenous must help in Tayrona decision: National parks

Colombia’s director national parks called for the indigenous people of Tayrona on the Caribbean coast to help in defining the park’s areas as her department cannot come to a decision, reported Radio Caracol Thursday.

Director Julia Miranda is bringing the decision of which zones are protected and which can be used for tourism and other activities to the indigenous people of Tayrona in the Magdalena department where eco-tourism has been banned by a court order since Tuesday.

BACKGROUND: Tayrona eco-tourism stopped again

The board had until Thursday to define the sacred and protected zones, but the director has asked for an extension as “we cannot come to a unanimous decision in national parks, it must be constructed with the indigenous communities,” said Miranda.

“If you are in conservation, research or eco-tourism, you need consultation,” said the director whose department will allegedly appeal the court ruling that chastised it for granting private concessions for development without prior consultation of indigenous communities.
