Indigenous governor rescued by community members

The governor of the indigenous community Resguardo Gran Mallama in the department of Nariño was rescued by members of her community after she was kidnapped on Monday.

Ana Pastora Belacazar was found tied up in a cave 24 hours after a group of 200 indigenous closed all access roads into the area in attempt to locate her. A group of armed and masked men abducted her on Monday and then asked for COP100 million ($55,100) for her release. After she was found, Belacazar was brought to receive medical attention.

“We express our contempt for such an act of violence against the personal rights of our governor and the community that she represents, because she is the maximum authority in our territory,” said one of Mallama’s council members.

Authorities are currently investigating to find those responsible for the kidnapping.
