IG investigates new FARC-ties allegations against Cordoba

Colombia’s Inspector General on Monday announced he will open a new investigation against former Senator Piedad Cordoba about her alleged links to the FARC.

Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez, who already barred the senator from holding public office for 18 years over her alleged FARC links, asked the police to hand over alleged correspondence between FARC leaders that indicates that the former senator warned the guerrillas about an imminent military rescue of a captive police colonel in 2008.

Ordoñez said he will also investigate alleged money transactions from Venezuela to finance the 2010 political campaigns of Cordoba and former House candidate Ricardo Montenegro.

Colombia’s police say they have recordings of phone conversations between the former senator and members of the FARC, especially “Manolo” of the guerrilla’s 30th Front.
