Colombia authorities suspended the hunt for three hippos that used to
belong to slain drug lord Pablo Escobar after the death of one caused
According to Antioquia official Luis Alfonso Escobar (not related) the authorities will no longer try to kill the animals but will look for ways to capture the hippos and seek shelter for them.
Escobar plans to meet with Colombia’s deputy Minister of Environment Monday to discuss the situation and reiterated that according to authorities the hippos are posing danger to the public.
The official said the hippos had been an increasing concern for the authorities in the Magdalena Medio region after reports that the animals had started reproducing.
After the world-wide attention generated by the death of one of the adult hippos, zoos showed interest to house the animals, Escobar said.
