House president abandons coalition, joins Liberal Party

The president of Colombia’s House of Representatives, Edgar Gomez, left coalition party Convergencia Ciudadana on Wednesday to join the opposition Liberal Party.

The switch is a big setback for the governing coalition who, because of this transfer, now lose the presidency over the House.

Gomez takes advantage of a recently implemented law that allows congressmen to switch party during their elected term. The law has been used a number of times by members of Cambio Radical, who, in disagreement with their party’s opposition to the re-election referendum, joined fellow coalition member, Partido de la U.
