by Adriaan Alsema June 26, 2008

“There’s an estimated 170 thousand Colombians over 15 that has HIV and only 36 thousand are diagnosed. There’s a treatment coverage of about 80 percent,” García said.According to the United Nations, AIDS in Colombia is affecting an increasing amount of women. The women, trusting there husband to be faithful, barely use protection, while their loved one may have a number of sexual partners.”According to recent reports, the trend presents itself on the Caribbean coast, Santander, the Coffee Region and the coastal areas of Valle del Cauca and Nariño. The disease is no longer concentrated and tends to spread, which is worrying,” García said. The representative of the UN body, focussed on the fight against HIV and AIDS, says the number of people being infected with AIDS globally is still rising and the epidemic is “far from being under control”.
