High courts demand respect

Colombia’s federal courts and Prosecutor General sent a letter to the
country’s Inter-institutional Commission of the Judicial Branch
demanding respect from the government.

The letter asks national and international governments for “respect for the autonomy and independence that are characteristic to the judiciary”. The letter comes after a long struggle between Colombia’s executive and judicial branch and shortly after President Uribe’s request to the Supreme Judicial Council to ensure that judges in charge of bail requests no longer free “criminals”.

The courts and PG also call to respect the “privacy and dignity” the country’s judges, referring to the wiretap scandal that erupted after security officials admitted they had been illegally intercepting the phonecalls of Supreme Court judges.
