‘HH’ gives prosecution memory stick of Castaño

by Adriaan Alsema July 10, 2008

According to ‘HH’ the memory stick contains copies of letters sent by Castaño to commanders of the United Self Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), e-mails from members of Colombia’s security forces and the testament of Castaño himself.’HH’ told prosecutors the memory stick also contains information about “Operation Tornado”, a failed government operation to infiltrate the paramilitary organization. The operation failed, ‘HH’ said, because infiltrators and informants within the security forces always kept him informed. The demobilized paramilitary chief said he received the memory stick, some documents and Castaño’s computer on the day he was murdered, but was only able to keep the memory stick.’HH’ confirmed stories by other paramilitaries that the abduction of opposition senator Piedad Córdoba and the murder on Colombian journalist / comedian Jaime Garzón were carried out by the AUC. He denied versions of fellow warlord ‘Ernesto Báez’ that the ELN was responsible for the kidnapping.’HH’ is one of the few paramilitary leaders who hasn’t been extradited to the United States and can still take part in the “Justice and Peace” process. ‘HH’ and the other members of the AUC agreed to demobilize, confess their crimes and compensate their victims in exchange for lower sentencing and avoiding being extradited to the U.S.
