Colombia’s Constitutional Court ruled a hermaphrodite child’s father is
not allowed to decide about the operation of his child, The child
itself must decide whether it wants to be a boy or a girl.
The father of the five-year-old had asked permission to have his child operated. He wanted the child’s ovary removed and vagina sew shut, so the child’s also present penis and testicles could develop normally.
The court ruled that decision is not up to the parent, but to the child himself. The five-year-old, together with parents and a team of specialists will have to do the process of gender consideration together, after which the child decides.
