Heavy punishments for bad hygiene in Bogotá

Bogotá authorities are set to start a war on those that leave garbage
in places where it doesn’t belong. Considerable fines and other
punishments are to be expected in the near future.

The city council approved this new plan on Thursday, and it is scheduled to be further discussed on the weekend.

Anyone who leaves garbage in the wrong places, and gets caught, will be paying a fine of two minimum salaries, which equals almost 1 million Colombian Pesos. On top of that, the perpetrator will have to spend four hours taking hygiene classes and might have to do a day’s worth of social service.

These sanctions will also be applied to people who drop pieces of paper or refuse to pick up their dog’s excrements. Even washing a car on the street will become a punishable offense.

If the perpetrator is a company, the fine could be as high as 10 million Pesos. And, if the company gets caught a second time, it could even lead to its closure or the retraction of its commercial license.

In the worst case, the owner of the company could even end up in jail.
