The commander of Colombia’s armed forces, Admiral Edgar Cely, has asked the Colombian people to have “patience” with the inevitable capture of FARC leader Guillerno Leon Saenz, alias “Alfonso Cano,” Caracol Radio reported Friday.
“These operations are not easy and require a lot of steps and covert operation. So there is much concern, I ask for your patience,” Cely said.
“We are continuing the work of intelligence on former commanders and the leaders are going to fall, like the president said, they are going to fall,” the admiral told Caracol.
Thursday President Juan Manuel Santos said that the government is “breathing down the neck” of Alfonso Cano, and that he will “fall as ‘Mono Jojoy’ fell.”
Top FARC commander Mono Jojoy was killed by Colombian state forces in September 2010 in a massive air strike in a region called La Macarena in the central Colombian Meta department.
The admiral declined to reveal where the guerrilla leader was specifically located saying that the operations against Alfonso Cano “have cost us much, and I cannot talk about them, because we have worked so hard on this.”
Cely did say that the strategy against guerrillas will focus on the Paramillo, Catatumbo, Cauca, Nariño, and Putamayo regions.
