Hackers steal $1M from north Colombia mayor

Hackers have stolen almost $1 million from accounts belonging to a mayoral office in northern Colombia.

Jairo Fernandez Quessep, mayor of Sincelejo in the Caribbean department of Sucre, said 13 fraudulent transfers had been made from various treasury accounts, amounting to $995,000.

Authorities had managed to block another payment of $362,000, and have traced the stolen funds to the Caribbean towns of Barranquilla, Riohacha and Valledupar.

Two people have been detained in connection with the theft, one of them a woman from Valledupar identified as Yolima Rodriguez Fuentes, according to Radio Caracol.
