Grenade attack in west Colombia leaves 5 seriously injured

A Thursday night grenade attack in Tulua, in western Colombia’s Valle del Cauca department, left five people seriously injured, among them three minors.

The explosion occurred outside of a residence in the municipality’s La Trinidad neighborhood around 11:15PM, El Pais reported.

Two individuals apparently drove by in a motorcycle and launched an American-made explosive device against the community center of the neighborhood.

The device destroyed the entrance to the building, where a displaced family had been living for the last three months, injuring five people in the process.

Three children, aged 4, 5 and 10, were seriously wounded in the attack after receiving injuries to their chest and lower extremities.

They have been transferred to hospital along with two adults who were also injured.

Authorities have not identified the motive behind the attack, although there are indications that it was related to an ongoing gang war in the city between micro-trafficking groups.

This is the third grenade incident in Tulua over the last two weeks, although on both other occasions the fragmentation grenades were either defused or failed to explode.
