Governors under pressure to provide help to conflict victims

Colombia’s collective of governors expressed their concern that there are not enough resources to meet the needs of the Victims and Land Restitution Law imposed last year.

The Victims and Land Restitution law, implemented to help victims of the armed conflict in Colombia, is costing local leaders more than expected and most have reported that they are only able to fulfill the law to the extent of how far their budget will go.

The governor of the southwest Huila department, Cielo Gonzalez, claimed several departments lack adequate resources, and for that he would go to the central government and ask them to consider issuing the resources they need.

Various governors have expressed their concern over the large number of cases that will need to be taken care of, including the large number of requests they’ve received to relocate farmers that would require the departments to obtain more resources.

The concern was made known before the Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez, who had asked the local leaders to submit their plans to attend the victims before the end of November.
