Government wants details about hostage release

The Colombian government Saturday asked the FARC to hand over details
about where, when and how the promised release of six high
profile hostages will take place.

“The FARC should tell the country the way, time and place this release will be realized,” Presidential spokesman César Mauricio Velásquez said Friday.

The government wants the guerrillas to surrender the hostages to authorities and the Red Cross and not to opposition senator Piedad Córdoba who, together with a group of 150 Colombian intellectuals, has brokered the release. Córdoba, against the will of the government, wants to form an international commission to arrange the release.

“The government is not going to jeopardize international relations. It is not necessary to involve [foreign] individuals or governments in this humanitarian action and the process of releasing the hostages,” Velásquez added.

The government says it will give all the logistical and security guarantees necessary to make sure that the release of the six hostages goes smoothly.
