Government seeks radical reform Supreme Court

The plan includes the creation of a second authority, next to the Supreme Court, to deal with the prosecution of state officials, who are accused of having ties with illegal armed groups.Lawmakers who are convicted by the Supreme Court now have no way to appeal their sentence, because the Supreme Court is the only and highest court to deal with the matter, the government says. The Uribe administration had several clashes with the Supreme Court over the past few weeks. Uribe accused judges of the court of having ties with paramilitary and guerrilla groups themselves and accused the Court of being selective in their investigations.According to Uribe, the Court is too focused on the trials of politicians with ties to paramilitary groups and neglects to prosecute those with alleged ties to leftist guerrillas.According to Caracol Radio, the government also seeks to reform the election process and of Supreme Court judges.
