Government proposes indefinite re-election mayors and governors

Colombia’s Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio presented Congress a draft
proposal for the indefinite re-election possibility for mayors and
governors, adding that Bogotá is not interested in an indefinite
re-election of Presidents.

According to Valencia Cossio, the possibility of an indefinite re-election would increase the continuity and stability of local and departmental policies, arguing that “in Europe and the United States the trend is that mayors are able to stay permanently.”

Valencia Cossio stressed the Government has no interest to propose the indefinite re-election for presidents.
