‘Colombia has not decided on US military pact’

by Scott Kobewka October 25, 2010

Colombia has yet to decide on the military pact with the US, Foreign Minster Maria Angela Holguin said on Monday in response to a coalition senator who had said that the government had decided to forget about the pact.

Colombia and the U.S. negotiated and in october 2009 signed an agreement that would allow the US to operate at least seven military bases in Colombia in order to fight drug trafficking and guerillas.

In August of this year, Colombia’s Constitutional Court ruled that the pact was unconstitutional until approved by congress.  Last week, Senator Alexandra Moreno told local media that the government had decided to not present the pact to congress, but according to Holguin, Santos has not changed his position on the pact and Moreno’s statement was the result of a misunderstanding.
