Govt considers change of base for FARC hostage release mission

The government is considering changing the base of release operations for the final two FARC hostages as negotiations with the Red Cross continue.

According to a report by W radio, the government is seeing if it is possible to utilise Cali or Popoyan airport rather than Ibague, the base for Sunday’s operations, as weather conditions have deteriorated there.

A decision as to whether the mission will indeed go ahead is still being awaited.

Speaking to the radio station, the commander of the armed forces, Admiral Edgar Cely Nuñez stated that he will be meeting at the presidential palace, Casa de Nariño, with state security agencies, President Juan Manuel Santos and the Red Cross delegation to come to a final agreement on the matter.

He added, “we hope that Christophe Beney (Red Cross) will be able to provide more information as to what happened on Sunday.”

The release of Salin Sanmiguel and Guillermo Solorzano failed on Sunday as the FARC allegedly provided the wrong coordinates for the release site.

The failure sparked a furious response from the government delegate to the operations, Eduardo Pizarro.

Mediator Piedad Cordoba requested that the release operation, the final phase of a week which saw four others released, be carried out at 6:00AM Monday morning.

However, the government announced on Monday that the mission would be suspended until they had met with the Red Cross to decide on its fate.
