Garzon embezzlement case to be reopened

by Teresa Welsh October 13, 2010

Colombia news - Angelino Garzon

The Colombian Inspector General’s Office on Wednesday ordered an embezzlement investigation against Vice President Angelino Garzon to be reopened.

Garzon was investigated for alleged embezzlement during his term as governor of the department of Valle del Cauca from 2004-2007. The office of the inspector general has requested that the case be reopened because the initial investigation was carried out by a delegate of the Prosecutor General’s Office, and not the prosecutor general himself. This investigation was closed due to lack of sufficient evidence.

Because Garzon is being investigated for actions undertaken during his time as governor, the investigation must be carried out by the prosecutor general himself and not by a lower authority. Any prosecution will be carried out by the Supreme Court.
