Funding re-election referendum still unclear

by Adriaan Alsema November 28, 2008

Even after the hearing of Luis Guillermo Giraldo, Partido de la U
secretary and organizer of the referendum to allow Colombian president
Álvaro Uribe to run for the Presidency again, the Electoral Council
still doesn’t know much about the mysterious foundation that made the
largest donation
.

A source within the National Electoral Council told newspaper El Espectador the council had tried to inspect the finances of the referendum, but wasn’t able to locate the adress of Primero Colombia, the non-profit organization that donated 2 billion pesos to the campaign.

The only information found about the foundation was the phone number of a Carlos Albero Jaramillo, who according to Giraldo, is the legal representative of the organization. Jaramillo, when asked by journalist, also wasn’t able to tell where the foundation is located.

Partido de la U scheduleded a press conference this Saturday to give clarity about the mysterious donor and its funds.
