Former senator arrested for paramilitary links

Former senator and founder of political party Convergencia Cuidadana
Luis Alberto Gil was arrested Monday for his presumed ties to
demobilized paramilitary organization AUC.

The senator was arrested just North of Bogotá and will have to appear before Colombia’s Supreme Court because he allegedly is linked to the demobilized Central Bolivar Bloc of the AUC. The prosecution claims the lawmaker used the influence of the paramilitariesin the north western department of Santander to be elected into congress.

Gil is one of the founders of the Uribista Convergencia Ciudadana party, a party who only has two of seven congressmen left who aren’t linked to paramilitary organizations. The prosecution the last two years opened investigations into the possible ties between the right wing paramilitaries and more than seventy congressmen.
