Former Senate president investigated in corruption case

The Supreme Court of Justice opened a preliminary investigation against former Senate president Nancy Patricia Gutierrez on Tuesday, over her alleged involvement with controversial health insurance company Saludcoop.

The court is trying to establish wether Gutierrez favored the company when she discussed the project of reform of the healthcare system.

The prosecution came into possession of a list of emails exchanged by the former Senate president and the former Saludcoop director. The conversation, which took place a year ago, included specific details of what the project of law were to be.

Gutierrez was also accused last September of illegally retreiving information from Colombia’s now-defunct intelligence agency to discredit political rival Piedad Cordoba.

Moreover, the court is investigating Gutierrez’s alleged ties with paramilitary groups.
