Former paramilitary receives 20 year prison sentence in northern Colombia

A former paramilitary was sentenced to 20 years behind bars for the deaths of two indigenous men in northern Colombia.

Julio Manuel Argumedo García, alias “Gabino,” has taken responsibility for the crime committed in July 2002.

“Gabino” unlawfully established a checkpoint in the village of Crespo and stopped a vehicle in which the two individuals were travelling.

The victims were taken to an off-site location and shot dead while Gabino threatened to return the following day to kill others, reports local media.

The paramilitary has a long line of convictions under his belt. He was sentenced to a combined 42 years in prison for the death of two other indigenous men in early 2000’s and was then arrested in 2007 for 12 outstanding warrants: five for aggravated murder, four for conspiracy and three for aggravated kidnapping.
