Former governor arrested on charges of embezzlement

A former governor and Liberal Party member was arrested Tuesday on charges of embezzlement, reported El Espectador Wednesday.

Whitman Herney Porras Perez is under investigation by the prosecutor general for allegedly having appropriated more than $25 million through a number of third-party trusts.

Perez is believed to have embezzled this money between 2006 and 2007, when he was governor of the Casanare department.

The former governor is currently being held by the prosecutor general, and will be moved to a penitentiary under the supervision of Colombia’s National Prison Authority (INPEC).
