Former congressman assassinated

Former congressman Carlos Alberto Oviedo Alfaro was assassinated
Saturday in Armenia, the capital of Quindío, local media reported.

The former congressman was shot inside an arepa restaurant even though he was serving a 25-year house arrest for murder, illicit enrichment and trying to escape prison. He had been a key witness in the trial against congressman Alberto Santofimio, who is suspected of having ordered the murder of his political rival Luis Carlos Galán in 1989.

The politician was shot by a sicario and taken to hospital where he died.
