Former Buenaventura mayor arrested for embezzlement

Detectives from DAS, Colombia’s intelligence agency have arrested the former mayor of the Pacific port city Buenaventura for embezzlement, Colombian media reported Friday.

Ex Mayor Saulo Quiñones Garcia along with three auditors were arrested for alleged embezzlement.

Investigations revealed that during his tenure as mayor Quiñones Garcia signed approximately 190 contracts for the construction, adaptation and renovation of the buildings of several educational institution. The value of these contracts exceeded $6 million.

DAS investigators closely revised 30 contracts worth $1.17 million and were able to establish that of the $949,000 paid $362,000 is unaccounted for.

The report states while the contracts were being carried out, there were constant changes, among them modifications to the designs and variation in the quantity of material required for the works.
