In response to the 8.2 magnitude earthquake in northern Chile on Tuesday, Colombia’s ministry of foreign affairs announced that it has activated its contingency plan to address the needs of Colombian citizens in affected areas.
In a statement released Tuesday, the ministry announced that it had activated its social networks and telephone lines for anybody requiring assistance. The ministry also stated that it would act as an intermediary for anyone wishing to contact family members in the Chilean cities of Arica, Iquique and Antofagasta, which are located in the area most heavily affected by the earthquake.

The 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern Chile, triggering a tsunami alert and killing at least five people.
Although a tsunami warning was initially reported for the Pacific Ocean, the Cali-based Southwest Seismological Observatory stated that it posed no immediate threat to the Colombian coastline.
