Five soldiers killed in combat

Five soldiers and one ELN guerrilla were killed in combat Tuesday in
the Arauca department, the Colombian military announced. The army tried
to prevent an alleged rebel plan to blow up an oil pipeline.

The following cross fire and bombs detonated by the rebels killed three soldiers on the spot. two other soldiers died on the way to hospital. One soldier is still in hospital.

The pipeline has been attacked a number of times over the years already.
