Fireworks accident leaves 23 injured in north-Colombia town

An explosion caused by fireworks injured at least 23 in a small town in the north of Colombia on Thursday.

According to local media reports, three were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Most media spoke of 23 injured but local newspaper El Universal said 27 people were hurt.

The fireworks were part of festivities to celebrate the coming of carnival in the town of San Juan Nepomuceno in the Bolivar department.

Government officials told newspaper El Tiempo that a can filled with gunpowder exploded unintentionally. The explosion shook the whole town.

The person in charge of the fireworks was arrested.
