FIFA wants lifetime ban for Colombia’s corrupt former soccer chief

Luis Bedoya

The ethics committee of international soccer organization FIFA has asked for a lifetime suspension of Colombia’s former soccer chief who has admitted to fraud.

Luis Bedoya, the disgraced former director of the Colombian Football Federation, was convicted by a US court for “racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies, among other offenses, in connection with their participation in a 24-year scheme to enrich themselves through the corruption of international soccer.”

The ethics committee of the FIFA, which is embroiled in corruption charges that transcends Bedoya’s offenses, recommended “imposing … a lifelong ban on taking part in any kind of football-related activity.”

Bedoya had admitted to US prosecutors that he had earned millions of dollars through bribes and kick-back schemes.

Bedoya is only one of more than a dozen former global soccer executives accused of corruption in the biggest soccer corruption scandal in recent history.
