Female Colombia soccer star loses leg in traffic accident

A former player for Colombia’s national women’s soccer team lost a leg in a traffic accident in Ecuador on February 16 and will never play again, according to local media.

Soccer star Yady Fernandez, former member of the Colombian national team and current player for Union Deportiva Las Palmas club in Spain, lost her left leg in a motorbike accident which left her cousin dead.

The accident occurred when the motorcycle she and her cousin were travelling on was hit by a car.

According to local reports, the car was being driven by an Ecuadorean soldier who was under the influence of alcohol.

Fernandez was on holiday in Ecuador with family at the time of the accident and is currently recuperating in hospital in Ecuador.

The sportswoman had to undergo two operations as her leg was too crushed to save and has been amputated at the groin.
