FBI to help Colombia in case against former hostage

The FBI will assist Colombia in the case against a former deputy who has been arrested for conspiring the kidnapping of himself and 11 colleagues.

According to Colombia’s prosecutor general, Eduardo Montealegre, the FBI will test whether the voice recording of an alleged conspirer in the 2002 mass kidnapping matches that of former Valle del Cauca deputy Sigifredo Lopez.

Lopez was released by the FARC in 2009, seven years after his kidnapping and two years after the guerrillas shot his colleagues during what the FARC called an army offensive.

Colombia’s Prosecutor General’s Office have accused the politician of having conspired with the FARC based on the testimony of a demobilized guerrilla and a video of an invisible person planning the operation.

The former deputy has denied the allegations. His attorney demanded the FBI to test the recordings.
