Venezuela statues aren’t FARC leaders, say locals

by Adriaan Alsema April 22, 2010

statues Venezuela

Following complaints by Colombia that statues built close to a Venezuelan border-crossing depict leaders of the FARC, inhabitants of the border region say the statues are of “revolutionary” leaders like Che Guevara and Fidel Castro.

Inhabitants of the Colombian Arauca department told newspaper El Tiempo that the statues on the other side of the border are of Simon Bolivar, Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, and not of prominent FARC figures like Mono Jojoy and Manuel Marulanda as earlier stated by the Colombian government.

The statues are in El Amparo, a Venezuelan town just across the river from the Colombian border.

Photos published in Colombian media are blurry and taken from a long distance away, making it difficult to determine who the statues really represent.
