Colombia’s main leftist rebel FARC group says it killed eight Indians early
this month in an incident that drew widespread
international condemnation.
The guerrillas say in a communique released online that the Indians
were “executed” for providing Colombia’s military with intelligence on
guerrilla movements in exchange for money.
In the statement, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia says
the action was not directed against the eight because of their race.
It says eight were detained Feb. 6 and all “confessed” to having worked with the army for two years.
The United Nations and Human Rights Watch are among organizations
who publicly condemned the FARC after indigenous leaders reported the
killings in the remote conflict zone. (AP)
