Colombian Defense Minister Gabriel Silva said Monday that the FARC have plans to impersonate security forces in order to carry out attacks during the first round of presidential elections on May 30.

“We have discovered a plan by the narco-terrorist group FARC to stage terrorist attacks disguised as police,” said Silva.

The minister said that the attacks were being planned to target “civilian populations in the Caqueta and Huila departments” with bombs planted on election day.

Silva also said that the guerilla group was trying to infiltrate social movements in an attempt to destabilize the country.

“We have detected pressures [by the FARC] on social and indigenous movements to force them to raise the levels of social protest to affect Colombians during the electoral process,” said Silva.

The defense minister called on the public to maintain a high level of vigilance as the country goes to the polls at the end of the month.

“We ask the public to be alert and inform us if they detect actions of that nature,” he said.
