FARC ‘mastermind of extortion’ killed in Tolima

A ringleader from the FARC’s 21st Front has been gunned down Thursday along with two other FARC members during clashes with the army in Tolima.

Luis Fernando Mendez, alias “Didier,” was considered to be the mastermind of extortion, according to El Tiempo, and had terrorized citizens from all over the Tolima region.

The 28 year old, who joined the FARC at 13, was found after the army discovered notebooks with thousands of names and phone numbers of extortion victims in Tolima, explained Colonel Julio Cesar Prieto. “His death is a relief for Tolima,” he added.

The two other FARC members killed were identified by their aliases “Riano” and “Jennifer,” or “La Flaca” (the skinny girl) as the army referred to her. A FARC member known by the alias “Robinson,” supposedly an explosive expert, was the only one captured alive.

The fighting continues in “El Canon de las Hermosas,” where authorities believe that FARC Supreme Commander Guillermo Leon Saenz, alias “Alphonso Cano,” is currently in hiding.
