FARC ‘leading explosive expert’ captured in western Colombia

The Colombian military captured on Monday one of the FARC’s alleged leading explosive experts in an operation in the west of the country while two other guerrillas were killed.

Colombia media reported that the FARC member, alias Carepuño, who was under an arrest warrant for crimes of terrorism, is believed to be a leading manufacturer of mines and homemade explosives known as ‘tatucos’ used by the Sixth Front of the guerrilla group in northern and southern areas of Valle de Cauca.

Following several months of intelligent work, Task Force Apollo Third Division captured Carepuño, revealing afterwards that he had “frightened the residents of the municipality of Toribio and surrounding areas, with the indiscriminate planting of improvised explosive devices in the areas of the township of Tacueyo, Huila , Congo, Santo Domingo, La Luz, and Buenavista.”

“He is an expert in the manufacturing and handling explosive devices (…) such as ‘tatucos’ and handmade grenades, besides planting landmines.” added the Apollo Task Force.

It was also reported that two other FARC members were killed in fighting while in total four guerrillas were captured.
