Police capture 2 of FARC head’s ‘security team’

Colombia’s national police said Monday they arrested two men suspected of belonging to a security ring of the FARC’s supreme leader “Alfonso Cano.”

According to Flavio Mesa, police commander of the southern Huila department, officers arrested Lina Margot Silva, alias “Daniela,” together with fellow guerrilla Toribio Saavedra Perdomo.

Both suspects belong to a select group of fighters in charge of the security of the guerrilla group’s number one.

“Daniela” is an “important part of the security ring” of Alfonso Cano and in charge of radio communications, according to the police commander.

“The ‘radistas’ [radio operators] are very important, because they are the people in charge of the communication, they know the secret codes used to communicate ‘securely’ between terrorists,” Mesa said.

According to the Colombian armed forces, several members of Alfonso Cano’s security team have been arrested or killed in the past few months, all near the south of the Tolima department, where the rebels’ supreme leader is thought to be located.
