At least 25 soldiers were killed in combat with the FARC in the eastern department of Guaviare, an army commander said Tuesday.
In an interview with Caracol Radio, commander of the 22nd Jungle Brigade, Carlos Velásquez Peláez said the soldiers were killed by the guerrillas in a town seven hours from the the capital of the department, San José del Guaviare.
Earlier reports said one soldier knew to escape the battle and was able to tell his superiors what happened.
“We have the information that they disappeared, but we are still investigating the situation,” an anonymous army source told French press agency AFP.
Colombia’s Defense Minister Juan Manuela Santos reportedly called for a special meeting with teh Armed Forces top commanders. This meeting is possibly attended byPresident Álvaro Uribe.
