FARC killed soldier in captivity: family

by Katharina Wecker June 5, 2009

Colombia news - Yeins Cardona

The FARC ignored the pleas to spare his life and killed an army sergeant
they had captured, his family says. They want the FARC to return the
body of their loved one.

The FARC allegedly killed Sergeant Yeins Alexander Cardona who had been kidnapped two years ago and thus committed a war crime.

The rebel group recorded a video of Cardona’s interrogation where he asked the FARC not to kill him. The video was sent to Caracol TV and broadcast Friday.

In the video Cardona asks the guerrillas not to kill him. “Don’t do it for me, do it for my children who wait at home”, Cardona said.

“How old are your kids?”, one of the guerrillas asked. “One is three-years-old and the other one 17-years,” the soldier replied.

Since this video, Cardona’s family has not received any other life sign of him which makes them believe that he was killed.

Cardona’s family wants the FARC to return the body “to end this drama”.
