Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has said that the FARC are seeking to increase their power base within the urban centers of the country, as their traditional rural strongholds have begun to falter, Caracol Radio reported Wednesday.
Citing several intelligence reports that apparently confirm the trend, Santos explained that “The FARC’s strategy to make themselves noticed is to take the armed fight to the urban centers because of their failure in the countryside. Through what they call the PC3, part of their strategy is to infiltrate the universities and social protest.”
The head of state added that the country and civil society must be conscious of the FARC’s intention and be alert to those who want to manipulate social protest for different violent actions.
Santos called the FARC’s wave of recent deadly attacks as “cowardly” and an indication of their decreasing strength as they resort to “terrorist attacks carried out by one or two people” and then “leave running.”
