FARC behind south-Colombia massacre: Authorities

The FARC is behind the Saturday massacre of seven in the south-Colombian Caqueta department, authorities said in a statement Sunday.

According to the statement, the victims of the massacre — six of them members of one family — had been extorting locals in the name of the FARC.

The assassination of the victims was carried out by the guerrillas as a retaliation for the false use of the guerrillas’ name in the family’s extortion activities, the authorities said.

Reports by radio stations RCN and Santa Fe conflict on which column of the FARC carried out the attack.

The massacre took place just outside the town of San Vicente del Caguan, located in an area with high FARC activity.
