FARC attack governor candidate in south-east Colombia

A gubernatorial candidate in Colombia’s south-eastern Guaviare department was injured on Sunday after alleged FARC guerrillas attacked his election caravan in an apparent kidnapping attempt.

Guerrillas ambushed the motorcade in which conservative politician Jose Perez Restrepo, his wife and a number of bodyguards were traveling.

The candidate’s driver was killed in the attack.

According to media reports, the politician was taken captive by the rebels, but was freed when by policemen and soldiers came to the rescue.

The Guaviare department is an area with a high presence of guerrilla forces.
