The FARC Tuesday asked Panama to suspend attacks on its guerrillas at the Colombia-Panama border and said its policy was not to fight the armies of neighboring countries.
The FARC’s reaction comes two weeks after Panama reported its army had killed three guerrillas in a jungle region of the border, an action applauded by the Colombian government.
The FARC published a statement on guerrilla-affiliated website Anncol labeling the incident “inexplicably agressive” and called on Panamanians “to aspire for this unjustified hostility to be corrected”.
Colombia and Panama share a 266 kilometer border in the middle of a region of great strategic importance for drug and arms trafficking.
