Facebook loses ground in Colombia

by Adriaan Alsema October 1, 2010

Colombia news - Facebook

Social media website Facebook lost users in Colombia for the first time in the company’s history.

According to data provided by Facebook to website enter.co, the social media giant now has 10.725,000 users in Colombia, 400,000 less than the last time it made its statistics public.

Despite the 3.5% drop, Colombia is still one of the most active countries on Facebook and has the 14th-largest number of Facebook users in the world.

A similar decline in usage to that of Colombia was observed in the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Turkey, and France.

Government figures released in May showed that one in five Colombians, 9.2 million people, have Facebook accounts. Of these, 6.8 million are adults.

Colombia has 3.2 million Internet connections (fixed and mobile), which is a 46% increase on last year’s figure of 2.17 million. 85% of public school students have access to the web.
