Minister receives warning for suspicious land purchase

by Katharina Wecker June 3, 2009

Colombia news - Fabio Valencia

Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio received a warning
from the Comptroller General Wednesday for paying 500 times the actual
value for land that was going to be given to indigenous people, Radio Caracol reported.

Valencia bought a premises in the Huila department to relocate indigenous families for 897 billion pesos, more than U.S.$ 400 million, while the land was valued at 164 million pesos (US$ 80,000).

Moreover, the Comprtoller concluded, the land is not suitable for the relocation of the indigenous tribe, because they can not grow crops on the land.

It is unclear who Valencia bought the land from and why he bought the unsuitable premises for that price.
